It seems from every possible angle that rossel and Co didnt treated Abidal properly.. Tito involved there? Idk, maybe.. But, remembering Eto'o anyone? Pep did the same things also..

Barcelona treated Abidal with complete class the whole way through.

Except when they said he'd get a renewal if he managed to play again, and instead he was shown the door.

Well they could easily have just not played him again.

I think they assumed that if he made it back to the stage of playing he would be physically able going forward.

It would have bee patronising to Abidal just give him a contract even if they thought he could not play at the same level as before.

The club has been phenomenal with him every step - giving him a contract when diagnosed with cancer, and offering him a job as soon as he feels his playing career is over.

This disgusts me...

It was a stupid thing to say but would you rather they gave him a new contract even if they think he could no longer play at the top level?

Or would you rather that they did not give him any run outs at the end of the season to stop them sticking to giving him a new contract?

One bright thing from the current situation is that Abi has definitely left in great terms. Fans would only be reminded of a great leader when thinking of Abi. His image would have surely tarnished if he had stayed here further(read 'played any more') of course. Like for example Thiarry Henry from the recent past. Even though he was phenomenal when he had the extra gear, his final season was kind of a nightmare.

They could have dealt the situation well though... The way he was shown the exit door gives a bitter taste in mouth.

Where is the option of sticking up to their word? Abidal was encouraged by that, then showed the door. It was not a nice thing, not horonable, nothing, and he is fine. Not giving a clear reason as to why they decided to let him go is also bad. I bet he would also accept a 6 month contract, with the option of another 6, if what they feared is that he cant play at top level anymore. It was all a disgusting thing.

Stick to their word even if they feel that he no longer has a future at the top level?

Would Abidal even want that being signed up by a team that has no intention of him having a regular role in the future?

If they had wanted that much to stick to their word then they could have just not played him again this season.

Sticking to their word does not just result in him getting a new contract.

Yes, it does. The club lied and his exit was wrong on many levels. It happens, but you cannot say they are right. They should had kept their mouths shut and make no promises, if they had no intention of keeping it.
