Gini Wijnaldum

Not that numbers matter that much, but it's quite astonishing that Wijnaldum hasn't recorded an assist for Liverpool since 2018.

Had 9 assists in PL during 16/17 season.
He has a total of 5 since then (4 during 17/18 season, 1 in 18/19). 5 assists in 14900 minutes, or one assist every 2980 minutes which equals 33 games.

Assists a bit more with his national team. 2 this season.

I was against him coming here at first. Same with Aguero or Depay but seeing our squad over the last year plus the situation we are in, financially wise, has made me change my mind. We are skint, we barely have money to pay the current salaries, nevermind buying world class players, so all in all i can't fault Laporta for signing these guys. Coutinho, Braithwaite, Pjanic, Firpo, Umtiti were non factors this season, some free signings with reasonable contracts, both in length and salary, is not the end of the world and we have nothing to lose by bringing them in. At worst, they don't perform and we sell them in the next years.

Long story short, we don't have any fucking money for better players so these will have to do.

I'm not a fan of not creative midfielders. As far as I'm concerned, Wijnaldum is a Rakitic-like workhorse possession recycler with an eye for goal. One plus is that he is much more press resistant than Rakitic who panicked every time under pressure. Hopefully he can give us 2 years of good service, after which we have to move on.

"We don't have money so might as well sign declining players for little money"
The same argument used for Pjanic

Way to go for rebuilding, we push out aged players to bring other aged players rejected by their clubs and were never top class to begin with in the case of Wijnaldum

Is Barto still in charge or what ?

I think his creativity is good, not great, but some of those passes to fullbacks are due to Liverpool's way of playing. I've seen Thiago doing them a lot too. It's just how they play.

He's a good player. The only problem is that he is on a decline as he's 31. 3 years ago he was a beast.

Another question worth asking: Has Klopp squeezed all the juice out of him?

That's an issue with players that play for the likes of Klopp, Pep and Simeone. They demand so much of them that some have a steep decline after a few years.

the guy was never 'a beast'. we talking here like this was some former world class midfielder. nobody in their right mind considered wijnaldum 3 years ago for a world 11 or best midfielders in the world list.

he was very good to klopp in a defined system. remember coutinho? yeah, he was also considered world class before joining us.

If he plays like the Wijnaldum we know, he will be a great addition and help the squad.
My concerns are that he could be drained physically and mentally and his main goal is to collect a big paycheck. But I am optimistic.

It's not even about rebuilding but having a functional squad at all. And I really wonder how some people envision the rebuild, 11-15 worldclass mid 20's in their prime? It's closer to 4-5 of those guys and making up the numbers with talents+quality squad players (like Wijnaldum...).

Given Wijnaldum doens't fall off a cliff like Arda, Pjanic...

We aren't that fussy to want 11 worldclass players. Just De Ligt, Kimmich, Sancho and Haaland this window. Is it really too much to ask :p

Rakitic was an absolute beast in 14/15. And really good in 15/16. It's the last 3-4 years that soured people IMO on him, Suarez, Busquets, Pique, and a few other seniors. Even Messi for some forumers.

Yeaah youre 100% right, people forgot about 2015 Rakitic, his dirty work was immense for us. Its a pity that he declined so fast. I dont think gini will be as good as peak raki.
