He should learn from it, but this lost could prove vital, I hope it's not.

But the decision he made about who to start was straight up Non sense, no two ways about it, could have rested all the players he wanted to in defense and still put out a better back 4.

It's not vital in itself, far from it. It's just a much smaller margin for error moving into the future. 3 pts is usually what separates winner from 2nd place in many close leagues where there are multiple challengers for the title. So... we need to either get them back vs a rival in h2h matches, or hope they fuck up and wait them around the corner again.

Flick has to understand he's not fighting vs Leipzig and Dortmund here. In La Liga it's not that uncommon for 2 teams to end up with high 80s points. There can be seasons like that where every extra point can be key.

Idk what to tell you all, if you can't understand he didn't make this lineup purely out of his will but because he simply had to.

Flick is known as a manager who won't rest his players unless they really need it and he gets advice from the medical staff that they really need it. We've known this since a long time, it's nothing new.

In Barça, in every case he decides to rest players he has to play absolute segunda level morons instead of them because our squad depth is shit. That part is not his fault. He already inherited the club when there was a ton of injuries and he agreed to deal with all of that. He managed to bring us 7 wins in first 9 games in charge, with an atrocious squad at hand.

We're still top of the league and Clasico is not that far away. The end of this winning streak was inevitable. Flick should learn from this and rest players more when we have a comfortable lead (such as vs Valladolid or Girona) but we as fans should not panic and should not deny him his incredible start to the season.

It kind of is. He choose to play Martin (who has never played above Primera RFEF level) over Fort who played well last season when given a chance. And he probably choose to send Valle (who has played last season in Segunda) on loan and keep Gerard instead.

He also selected Dominguez over others BA CBs who are probably better. His talent evaluation is very questionable so far tbf.

Coaches should think ahead with rotations. It's never a good sign to have so many "starters" (whoever starters are in this injury ridden team) on the bench you can't even put all of them on if things go wrong.

What he should have done is rest 3-4 players at home vs Getafe and 1-2 today. He did the opposite and rested only Pedri vs Getafe while playing full starting defense and attack. And today he rotated two defenders and forwards and also Casado. I think he strongly underestimated Osasuna and it backfired.

And as pointed out in one of previous posts Raphinha and/or Yamal should have been subbed out in some of previous games when we were leading for 3 or 4 goals. If not for accumulation of minutes just to protect them from frustrated opponents injuring them. We've seen some starts on Yamal late in Villarreal game. Yeah, you can't always protect your players but in these type of situations/games it's what coaches should also think about before it's too late.

Yeah I agree with all you said there.

Have to have a better balance of rotating between games, and sub some key players out when games are won. Most teams do that now.

Good post. Tactics are his strong point, I quite fancy his vision, man-management his weak point so far. If he can work on using his players better and smarter... he can go far at Barca.

I don't care much about his attitude with the press.

Yep, I know German mentality is to go full force until the end but there is zero difference between winning against Valladolid 3-0 or 7-0. Especially in La Liga where head to head and not goal difference is a tie-breaker if we would somehow finished tied on points with Madrid.

Yamal has already been overplayed in his short career and knowing our history of other youngsters who are now somewhat damaged goods we should be even more careful with him. Yeah, he probably won't be happy to be subbed out in 70th minute in certain games and start some others on the bench but long term he'll realise that's good for him and the team (like Messi did when Rijkaard kept rotating him with Giuly).

As fun as he is to watch and as important as he is to this team I would prefer to see him as a fully developed 23 year old player with no serious injury concerns in a top team that can compete for every trophy year after year than hope (because that is all we have right now) a 17 year old kid will drag us to trophies this or next season. IF it will happen then great but mid-to-long term future should be more important than short-term gain. This club has been short sighted for far too long, it's time to finally change that.

He's not there yet though and more importantly this team and club are not there yet. He's not a 24 year old Messi with multiple Ballon d'Ors who had to play every game and more importantly who has learned how to play almost every game. Yamal's talent is out of this world but his body is still developing and adapting to the demands of modern football that are tougher and more extreme every year. We see evidence of that in increasing number of serious injuries to top players who are overplayed and overworked and we don't want him to become the next one who will break down at some point.

Yes, it's possible he's just build different than Ansu, Pedri, Gavi, Balde,... and will never have any injury problems but we don't know that and club should do everything they can to protect our biggest crown jewel since Messi and give him a chance to become the best player he can. Part of that is also building a competitive team around him so he won't have to carry us on his shoulders like he already needs now at his young age.

And OTOH we have Raphinha who will always play on 120% rather than 80% and waste energy in games that are already won. It's his personality and I respect and love that about him but sometimes you also have to play with your head not only your heart.

It's part of coaches job to protect players especially when you know alternatives are not nearly close to the same level. You want to have your best players fit and as fresh as possible in important moments that are coming later in the season. Yes, it's fun to watch but we won't win anything more than 3 points for scoring 7 against Valladolid or 5 vs Villarreal in September.

Also, by subbing Yamal and/or Raphi out against "dead" opponents you also give a chance to your bench players like Ferran and Pau to maybe score in those games and build their confidence and get in synch with the rest of the team so when they actually start (like today) they can possibly provide more than they would if they never or rarely play.

When you only have 15 healthy first team players you need to use all of them even if some of them are not in form or don't have required quality (yet; though some will probably never have it) but you still have to play them when you need to rest your key players.

You should find better ways to rotate without effecting quality of the team you put out there too much like Flick has done today. It's good to see him admitting his mistakes and hopefully he'll learn from them. And more importantly hopefully we'll also finally have some luck with injuries and then everything should be easier if we'll have actual players of better quality and more experience to rotate when needed.

Agree with it all. Excellent post.

The caution you call for over playing players too early in their careers while they're still growing and developing mentally and physically is my main take away. I have saw people say the same thing. Pedri and Gavi have already had injury problems due to being overworked. We don't want to see Yamal go the same way.

Hopefully all three (and others) can enter their peak years (though Yamal is further away than those two as he's still only 17) in good condition. It's up to the coaches and medical staff to give them every opportunity to stay fit and provide the platform where their talent and football IQ do the talking.

You could be better than Messi but if you're never fit or had to retire as a kid due to injury it means nothing. Like you say it's so important that the kids (and other players) aren't overworked as they could still theoretically have 15-20 years to go in their career. Lewandowksi said the same thing about Yamal and others, and as a 36 year old man in tip top shape and with a good 20 years of pro football behind him, he should know the value of being fit.

I just hope they don't ruin this potential once-in-a-generation talent of Yamal.

This was bound to happen with all our injuries and the bench strength we have. Obviously, he going to have to learn to rotate better.
I'm also surprised about Valle and especially Fort who us much better than Martin.

Later today, Hansi Flick can equal Tata Martino's record of the best league start in Barcelona history, with 8 straight wins.

Fell short

And conceded 4 goals to fkn Osasuna lmao

Interested to see how he and the team respond. He got it wrong and admitted it, fair enough move on. One of my gripes with Xavi was him never learning from mistakes.
