Isaac Cuenca

whaaaaaaaat? On the ball he still is very smart, creative, and multidimensional and his crosses are still almost perfect. If Kolbeinn could have gotten decent contact on any of Cuenca's crosses, he would have 3 assists by now. The only thing I see that he isn't doing well is that he remains very isolated on the touchline and sometimes doesn't move much to make himself available for a pass. Although that might be because of a coach telling him to stay on the wing to stretch the play. I hope when he returns to Barca he drifts inwards and gets more involved. He's been playing very well and every time he's gotten the ball on the right, he's instigated an attack for Ajax. Sometimes he does seem too intent on crossing rather than running in and shooting/passing though.
Maybe its just me expecting too much but it took him till the 70th minute to get past his opponent.
I just remember him to be a lot better for barca last season, he gets disposed of the ball very easy at the moment, obviously he deserves some credit and time since he only joined recently.
But you would never expect him to be from Barca if you didnt know.

They're playing differently and he's being more direct for ajax. He might not have gotten right past his opponent but he's been doing very well at wrongfooting the defenders and then taking a quick touch forward and whipping in a deadly accurate cross. He isn't physically strong on the ball so sometimes he does get pushed off but overall I'm very pleased by his performance. He has been the catalyst for many of Ajax's attacks and is very important in attack when he is involved in play. Even as we speak he just dribbled/wrongfooted 2-3 defenders and nearly scored (the shot wasn't very good though)

All in all I'd say that if one of our wingers gave this kind of performance, we would be applauding them. Despite being right next to the touchline for most of the match, Cuenca was involved in almost all of Ajax's attacks and did very well. He lost possession more than you would like but he made things happen instead of being tame and just playing a back pass.

That shot was the most usefull thing he did along with those few crosses from the right.
You saw when he was on the left wing towards the end, the rightBack was able to keep him from passingby just giving him a little push and timing corrrectly.

It might be better if he plays more to the inside rather than staying on the touchline, that way he can set up combo's better and create chances.
He seems better at that than being a classic right winger that swings it in after passing, so being more threatning like Fischer can be might be better.
I disagree that he did well today, barely decent imo but I still have hopes that when he becomes more used to their play he will be able to adapt better and contribute more while displaying the skills we know he has.

He and de jong were ajax's main attacking outlets that game and he played very well although he was sometimes isolated on the right wing

WOW! We play Sanchez and Pedro out of form and this guy is twisting defenses after being out for so long time in a new club. Do we really need Neymar when Cuenca pulls stuff like this. I'm sorry to say, but Sanchez needs to go and this guy is the future. So happy for him :)

Wow crazy timing DonAndres, I was JUST watching matches from last year and remembering how damn amazing Cuenca was on our wing. He would have been the ULTIMATE aid to our frontline. Him on either the left OR the right flank is infinitely better than both Alexis and Pedro when they're this off form.

Imagine Villa - Messi - Cuenca

or

Cuenca - Villa - Messi

We have an extraordinary winger who can play in perfect crosses, take on and beat his man, shoot and make plays in Cuenca. We have Villa, the deadly jungle cat,
and then we have Messi.

How long is Cuenca loaned out for? I hope he returns, he has a lot of potential, he's already a great player.

Anyway I wish him well, he deserves to get the recognition and experience he will at another club with more playing time. He looks good at Ajax.

Isaac Cuenca, on loan at Ajax, has not been included in the match squad for tomorrow's league game against Twente. He has knee discomfort.

Loaning him out was a good decision. He needs playing time.
Hopefully, he'll be a great player (and maybe a starter) for us when he returns.

IMO, our front line next season should be:
Cuenca-Messi-Villa (maybe Messi-Villa-Cuenca at times). I agree it would be beastly.

Yes I agree, after watching his games at Ajax I completely take back what I said. He is playing AMAZING there, Wow. I am so impressed. He really looks like the best on that team already from what I can see lol, the experience he gets there will do wonders for him. When he comes back I think he could really be part of the next "superstar/elite" generation with Thiago, Delofeu, etc.

Cuenca plays better on the right as a playmaking outlet. Also it's more optimal for him there because he can stretch the play very well. Ultimately the role I would describe him in is a more direct, attacking version of Iniesta who is more built to operate in a front line. Obviously he doesn't have the same level of talent as Iniesta but on the wing his role is somewhat similar. Taking on defenders, beating them with skill, and then playing in a pinpoint attacking based pass. We can't have Cuenca and Iniesta on both wings though (unless we're playing a horrible team) because that once again forces Messi to be the only goalscoring outlet.
