Jean-Clair Todibo

Still can't find anything about whether his loan will include a buy option for Schalke or not. :(

The last I've seen is both clubs are still negotiating about this. But if S04 will have a buy option we'll have a buy-back. Todibo doesn't want to leave Barça permanently and I think we are also not ready to fully give up on him.

Loan deal should be officially confirmed today and Todibo is expected to train with Schalke this evening. S04 will have a buy option and we'll have a buy-back.

Edit:

It's a loan until 2021. We can buy him back in 2022 if S04 exercise their buy option.

So Todibo will basically have 2,5 years to develop and he'll still be only 22 if we decide to bring him back. We'll surely buy a CB in summer and by 2022 Pique might retire so there will be an open spot for Todibo's potential return but a problem is we'll have to go through this season with what we have.

Such a stupid decision, Umtiti is injury prone, Pique will be 33 next month and collects yellow cards for fun, Lenglet is prone to red/yellow cards as well. We will absolutely need Todibo at some point even if it is just because there are no other options.

This is a case of a good deal at the wrong time.

It is clear that the club see Araujo as the 4th option in necessity. Which is OK simply by the fact that he is consistently playing. But he is Oleguer bad on the ball, and Oleguer bad standing square on in one-on-ones. And I like the guy overall but this is the type of defects he has.

It is also clear that Araujo being ahead of Todibo in Valverde eyes is nothing more than the boards spin on the head of the yes man. Valverde is gone and the movement proceeds.

Logical decisions would have Setien assess Todibo, Alena for the first few weeks of the market before moves happen.

Good god that's a stupid deal. Should've been just a 6 month deal without any clauses like with Alena. But honestly we shouldn't be loaning him out at all, especially since Setien likes to play 3-4-3 a lot too, so we basically have to play all of them in that case. We'll need to buy TWO new CB in the summer then, although I'd actually like it if we bought one this month already, feeling really uneasy about going into the 2nd half of the season with just Pique, Umtiti and Lenglet. Umtiti gonna need to stay fit, while Pique HAS to play on a high level at all times. But that's a lot of IF, we're playing with fire here. I don't trust Lenglet at all, should be our 3rd or even 4th choice CB.

Sending away a talented CB until 2021 (2022) for no reason at all when the only CBs left in the first team squad are Pique, Lenglet and Umtiti is hard to explain.

Only hope for a decent CB lineup is Setien falling in love with Araujo or another la masia kid because there is no way they sign two decent CBs this sommer, even one would be a welcome surprise. Keeping Todibo would've at least meant one more option for the coach.

I mean this clueless board has actually been excellent in the CB area, not their fault Valverde never gave Tobido playing time to develop, now we can't realistically use him in CL with how shy he would be, we will most likely get something like Fonte in the winter and get knocked out again.

We have 5 CB options even in this moment:
1. Pique
2. Lenglet
3. Umtiti
4. FRENKIE DE JONG
5. Araujo

I know, people will say: no, we can't let Frenkie play in defense.
That is just in emergency case, if Pique and Lenglet would be out, we could survive with Umtiti-Frenkie for 2 matches.

So:
1. if Todibo stayed: we already have 3 CB options who will be rotated and Todibo wouldn't get more than 2-5 matches till the end of a season
So, not a good option for his development.
2. if Todibo leaves: we still have 3 good CBs and 2 bonus options in Frenkie and Araujo, so we will survive unless if a freaky injury crisis happens (but then, imagine if Suarez and Messi get injured. When things like that happens, you are screwed either way).

I know that it is popular to blame a stupid board and a coach for everything, but in this case, this was a perfectly reasonable decision:
1. both for Todibo's development and playing time where he could get 10-20 matches till the end of a season
2. and for Barca

Well first of all i think it's dumb in general to send away young players like Alena and Todibo right before a new coach takes over. But that one just shows how quickly they decided to suddenly sack Valverde so it is what it is.

Besides that the loan till 2021 and buy back 2022 model isn't benefiting Barca, it's just too long in my opinion. The best case for the loan of a young player is that he plays amazing from the get go. But if that's the case with Todibo Barca can't get him back until 2022, that's 2,5 years from now. And these 2,5 years could also very well be played without any CL (or even EL) football for him because Schalke isn't exactly a stable performing club.

Worst case for the loan would be barely getting any minutes at all. But then same problem, let's say things go wrong and he just plays some minutes here and there for Schalke this season because they bench him. Is there a possibility to try him in pre-season for Barca? No. Is there a possibility to maybe loan him to another club or sell him? Also no. Maybe not the most likely scenario but still not ideal for Barca.

I can see why they would think about a loan (even though the timing with the new coach makes it look very questionable) but i don't like the conditions that are being reported right now at all. Barca being able to get him back this summer or immediately use the buy-back in 2021 could maybe make this a decent deal, but it doesn't look like that's the case. Keeping the control over the players should be a priority especially if we talk about a position that isn't particularly strong in the current squad. Just imagine Todibo becomes a starter and plays good every game...but then Barca won't be able to get him back 2020 or 2021 and instead will have to wait another year (possibly even having to sign another player instead to fill the gap) just to buy back the player they already had.

Not convinced with this deal. And for CBs in general i'd say they ideally have to sign 2 new players, or one of Setien is satisfied with Araujo. Pique/Umtiti/Lenglet doesn't cut it anymore and using Frenkie there shouldn't be an option unless he's expandable in midfield, but seeing that he's by far the best player there that seems rather unlikely for now.
