Overall, he had a so-and-so game.

He had not many eye catching tackles ala Pique and Mascherano, but his presence alone greatly limited the Villareal counter threats. He's ideal CB to play in such games (together with Mascherano) because of his speed. That they both were chosen by LE (instead of Busq and Masch as CB) was great decision by LE. Villareal did almost nothing for whole game. It should have ended 4:0, really.

Pretty good in the air against Villareal. Don't trust him one bit when under pressure, but he'd do a good job against teams that barely come out of their own half.

Mathieu's career here will only last till 2016 IMO. He quite simply isn't good enough.
