Juan Manuel Mata

Cannot compare the two for a while, Iniesta has 4 years on him. Iniesta really started becoming ridiculous at around 23-24, Mata is doing the same. Don't see Mata surpassing Iniesta but I don't think he'll be miles off either.

Exactly. Iniesta's a better midfielder/player, but Mata's a better playmaker, and it's fuckin ignorance to even laugh the notion off just because it's Iniesta.

Mata's first touch is as good as anything in Europe right now, he provides a bigger goal threat and he creates more goal scoring opportunities than probably anyone else in Europe bar Messi, plus he's certainly more consistent. If it wasn't for him this season I fear we'd be mid-table, toothless going forwards and one seriously leaky defence. Iniesta's a better dribbler, he can dictate games better, he's renown for his form in the big games and his top level is certainly superior to Mata's - when he's in the mood he can be devastating, which puts him on a higher platform to the likes of Silva, Mata, Ozil and co, kind of like Zidane

Really, you want to go down the Youtube video approach? Iniesta's a better player, I haven't denied that, but he aint a fukkin better playmaker, end of discussion.

Mata is more effective in the last third, but that's not Iniesta's forte at all. It basically depends on how you define playmaker... I'd say 'someone who makes things tick', someone who controls the play, dictates the game

I feel like your definition of playmaker is "someone who gives the final pass". Nowadays, it's difficult for the likes of Iniesta and Xavi to give the final pass (unless they're on the wing) because of the way teams line up against Barca. You can easily notice how much more dangerous Iniesta is assists wise when he's on the wing. Isn't he leading Europe in assists?

Edit: 3 consecutive posts about definition lol.

Mata a better playmaker than the midfielder than was second to Messi at the Ballon D'or?

Yes, yes, sure.

Agreed. If they were in the same side they'd compliment each other well. In fact, a Mata, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets diamond would be brilliant for Spain.

Yeah, I can see how a video of Iniesta actions in the final third would be inappropriate in a discussion involving his effectiveness in the final third.
