Hi guys long time reader first time poster here...
First of all it?s only fair to say that I?m not a Barcelona fan as such, but I did form an attachment to the great side Pep built, especially Messi and Iniesta. I guess this was because at the time my beloved Leeds United were truly awful. (Ironic as we now play some of the most entertaining football possible under Marcelo Bielsa).
Ever since Messi scored the solo goal at the Bernabeu in 2011 I have been totally obsessed with watching the guy play. I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the away leg against Manchester City in 2015 where he was completely out of this world and I felt lucky to witness it in person. And just when you thought he was past his best, the 2-3 game where he scored with the last kick against Real Madrid in 2017(?) was the closest I?ve ever seen to one man dragging a team to victory. His ability really does make you feel that anything is possible, and it?s why I stayed up watching Argentina who are awful as I?m sure plenty of other on here have... And tbf the hat trick to put them to the World Cup was worth it!
You guys will be pleased to hear however that I?m not one of these people who thinks everything he does is perfect and whenever it goes wrong it?s everyone else?s fault!
Last night I felt sad regarding Leo. For Barca fans you have a good young core coming through and things will go on, but I think this felt like the last chance to see something truly amazing from Messi. The goal is absolutely out of this world and that?s what makes you believe he can decide anything.
But the big disappointment I?ve come to realise is that his mental strength will always bite him. For the penalty I swear he hesitated after the whistle, I knew he was going to miss it. Then if you watch the corner kick immediately after, he stands as the PSG player dribbles past him. 5 minutes earlier when he was buzzing from his goal I saw him make a great sliding interception!
For me personally he didn?t really bring it in the second half and unfortunately it?s one of the factors of his career that adversity just seems to cripple him. You just want him to take the ball and keep trying, keep making himself available, dribble and win free kicks then no one will be able to say anything if it still doesn?t work!
In fairness it wasn?t as bad tonight as on other occasions. And of course the one situation where you couldn?t really blame Messi is anfield where youd like to think that he did enough!
Finally the guys luck is also terrible... if it hits Navas an inch higher it would cannon into the roof of the net and no one mentions lack of composure. Same way that if higuan scores in one of the copa finals then he doesn?t get criticised for not winning with Argentina.
His career has been so good and yet still leaves me with a bitter taste of ?what could have been? if he could truly channel his unbelievable talent when the biggest moments came around.
Hopefully it won?t be the end of Messi on the biggest stage, and I also fully accept that as a non Barca fan on here my opinion doesn?t really count!
Cheers
