Lionel Messi - v7

OK, but it doesn't change that game could've went either way even without the handball goal.

Yeah it could clearly but huge advantage clearly to get a decision like that.

I went back few years ago and watched every Argentina game in that WC.

They got a hell of a lot of decisions and far from being a WC which was brutal and Maradona dealing with butchers pretty much every time he was even touched if he threw himself down the ref gave a foul.

I don't believe the myth of Maradona either to the extent it's been told from generation to generation.

Napoli is another hyped up 'myth of Maradona' situation.

They spent big when Maradona came in and replaced near enough whole team.

It was not some league dominated at all times by best in europe either as English league was better before their ban and Hellas Verona had won the league in 1984 led by Elkjaer.

Great achievement to win league but this idea he single handed took relegation threatened Napoli to success in greatest league going is all a bit much.

He also did next to nothing in European Cup for being able to do whatever he wanted on the pitch.

The notion that he made Argentina and Napoli win single handedly is stupid. Both had very good teams. I always thought careca was underrated. I actually don't hold his lack of success in the old European cup too much against him, you have to remember in those days you could only qualify by being league champions and not top 4 like now. So he wouldn't have had many opportunities to win

He was in the European Cup twice and did nothing and it is in his power to get there more often than a WC is.

Although top four did not qualify that also meant there was not the same depth to it when qualified.

Mardonas record in European football as a whole was poor.. 5 goals in 25 games for Napoli for someone who is made out to be almost able to score at will is not great and fiarly sure it was only 2/3 from open play.

As I said before, those people who think he won single handedly are stupid. I still think it's difficult to win with only 2 attempts. It isnt always easy to win your league and the year your team is at its strongest you might not be in the tournament. Take 14/15 CL for example, we wouldn't have been in the tournament even though we were the best team in the world. In the old format, Real Madrid would have only been in 2 tournaments in the past decade

Anyone know what the record for most assists is in a season in top 5 leagues? I know record in La Liga is 20 (Xavi and now Messi) but can’t seem to find overall record for top leagues.

If anything his post-match interview is the only hope we have in terms of making change from our horrible errors with the board. That being said if he really is serious about self criticism then he has to acknowledge the veteran benefits. There’s no other way

If only Messi will score and get the Pichichi. Otherwise Benzema could suprass him ofc with three penalties given for VARdrid.

I watched supposedly one of Maradonas best performances for Napoli against juve in uefa cup quarters. It was a 3 nil win to take them through 3 2 on aggregate and I wasnt that impressed. Careca looked the best napoli player on that night. I say this but the guy who wrote the article that made me watch the game might have not been thruthful about it been one of his best games and just said it because of the impressive comeback. Also the game was very scrappy which was common in those days which makes it harder for a player to look very impressive on a consistent basis
