Lionel Messi - v7

Because he's trying to leave on good terms by getting Barcelona a fee for him.... because technically both parties have a case about the contract. He can't just leave for another club until it's all sorted out. He's tried to set up a meeting a couple of times but Bartomeu doesn't want to hear it.

No he isn?t if could be away for free would be at City already.

Imo, it doesn't reflect the strength of his case but his determination to leave.

Either you are free to leave or you are not. The fact he wants to negociate clearly means he is not free to leave.

I have a problem with absolute statements like yours.

It's possible that he wants to have a friendly exit, which could mean negotiating a fee and leave on good terms.

If the club can't negotiate a fee, then he would have to go to to court to leave the club.

It's also possible that what you're saying is true as well.

The point is nobody can be absolutely sure what is happening because we don't know the what the board and Messi is thinking about.

Bartomeu is stating he can't leave for free because apparently he still has a buyout clause. Messi can't just go and sign for another club whilst Barcelona are still arguing their case. He has to legally leave the club for free. That's why he hasn't signed for City yet. Both parties are making cases about the contract.... which won't get sorted till they go to court. Bartomeu did state back in 2019 that if Messi wanted to leave before the 20/21 season, that he could leave for free. They wouldn't stand in his way. He's going back on his word.

Messi wants to avoid all of this. He wants to negotiate a fee with another club so they can end on good terms.

EPL teams shit in Europe as usual?

Had all four finalists last season and winner and beaten finalists the year before.

Don?t be too dissapointed when it happens.

I have always argued for la liga but now can?t as quality across board is not good enough in my opinion and Sevilla winning la liga doesn?t change that.

It's not a good argument that you make. People have been saying that shit for years.

Madrid and Barca will always have wealth generally and will compete with the top end of the Premier League just like Bayern will. The Premier League as a whole has always been wealthier than La Liga.

Some of best players will play at the top teams in the Premier and some at Madrid, Barca and Bayern, Juve, PSG. Just because Everton have more money than Sevilla doesn't mean Barca and Madrid are not going to get the best players.

I agree with you but more on the Finance and marketing side. The Prem on a whole has alot more money compared to la liga and also way more marquee players. This has been the case for sometime now, but it hasn't necessarily translated to success on the field.

Sevilla proved again that it can win the Europa easily with a very modest budget. The Prem teams continue to spend alot of money but they haven't dominated Europe as many thought they would. I think Spanish teams will continue to be relevant in years to come.

Sevilla win Europa and held up as sign for la liga but EPL teams been far more dominant in that competition in recent seasons but dismissed.

Spanish teams will clearly still be relevant but in my opinion will not be dominant and EPL teams will perform better across board.

Added to that the very top players will be harder and harder to get to La liga.

He can't. Barcelona is arguing their case of why he can't leave for free. Messi is arguing his case of why he should leave for free. He has to leave legally. That won't get sorted until they go to the courts.

Messi is trying to avoid all of this by negotiating a deal.

Not true. For years la liga was held up as best league and destination where majority of top players wanted to end up.

Let?s see who is correct on which teams perform better in next few seasons.

That's false. La Liga was held up as the best league because of performances in Europe.

The top players don't want to play in La Liga, they want to play for Barca and Madrid.

Of course Premier League teams can succeed, but my point is that at the top end it won't be because of financial advantage. Barca make over 200 million more than Liverpool annually and who has the better team?

Success on the pitch is about more than money

Messi is really acting as a prick right now. I am truly disappointed by him. We should insist on 150 + Garcia. Or 100 + Bernardo + Garcia. Fucking City can't get him for free! What's even worse is the fact that he is our captain.

It goes in cycles. Serie A had a golden age in the 80s and especially the 90s into the early 2000s. A 20 year peak and then it came crashing to a halt.

La Liga's golden age was the 2000s to 2020. Real Madrid with 5 European Cups and Barcelona 4. Atletico and Valencia reaching 2 CL finals each and Villareal and Deportivo a semi final (most of these clubs have had a sharp decline on and off the pitch). Sevilla with 6 Europa League's and Atletico 3 and Valencia 1. The Real Madrid Galactico side of early 2000s, 3 CL titles in a row. Barca with arguably the greatest club side ever under Guardiola and at least one of them. Messi and Ronaldo. Ronaldinho and Zidane.

Messi's departure will confirm the end of that, although in reality Barca's decline has been years in the making and the champions Real Madrid have been schooled in the last 16 by Ajax and Man City in their own ground in the last two seasons.

Further to the Serie A comparison is the decline of AC Milan which Barca are determined to repeat. While Barca and Real will regroup and be better again eventually, the rest of the league is really struggling apart from Simeone still going at Atletico and Sevilla's Europa League love affair. The fact neither could get near a mediocre Real and a poor Barca all season speaks volumes though.

Messi's departure doesn't confirm anything, Real & Barca are the 2 biggest clubs in the world and will continue to be so. We don't know what will happen in the future but many have been predicting the Premier League imminent dominance for years, even as far back as 2005 and it hasn't happened. Barca and Real will rebuild, Klopp will leave Liverpool and Pep will leave City and both of these clubs will struggle to match what they are doing now, and apart from those 2 clubs the rest of the league is mediocre. Look at this season, Spanish and English sides met 10 times, Spanish sides won 6 of those and drew another. And this is a down season fro Spain, La Liga will continue to be very strong and Barca and Real will get back on top very quickly just as they have always done.
