Lionel Messi - v7

Let's hope the club will make 1bn in revenue in the future, so the money paid to Messi will be almost irrelevant. But, as a principle, it is really bad how the club handled the relation with Messi. It's as if Barca is nothing without Messi. Even though when Barca and Messi first got together, Messi was nothing and Barca was still one of the biggest most renowned clubs in the world.

Really acted like a small club in all of this.

We were already there by the club's account (lauded as the first club to do so at the time. That said, it was probably enabled by Bartomeu's shady accounting) and not far even by Deloitte's numbers pre-COVID, but I really wonder if we will be there any time soon, or after many other clubs have done so. It will take several years for tourism to rebound so match-day money will continue to be depressed; TV/broadcast money will take time to recover too and we genuinely face the threat of being banned from the CL for two years, which will cost us heavily like 100m a season; Messi being less effective and gone from the club might make us less attractive to sponsors...

We will have to do a lot of things right to get there and I hope we will be one of the first (probably after Real Madrid, Bayern and even United).

I don't get why he hasn't announced that he's staying. He obviously is.

I just don't want to see him moaning if we do shit next season. He had his chance to leave. I'm sure his dinner dates with Aguero will ease his pain.

So how the heck are we going to reduce our wage bill, after the 22/23 season when Messi is gone, when he is not generating much money for us but we will still be paying a portion of his wages that we owe him?

If Messi really cared for the club, he would write off the debt. I hope the club is not paying him that 33m loyalty fee.... and I hope he isn't taking a signing-on fee if he resigns with the club.

He is not taking a pay cut at all. Will just be paid in smaller instalments for a longer amount of time. Why would he leave? No other club is this desperate for him. Still taking home 200m+ in wages for two years of work. Not even PSG would match that.

Well said. He has made his bed, now he needs to lay in it. Why must the player with the most talent have such a loser/unambitious mentality? Makes things so boring... i can only hope that a new messi-esque talent emerges that has a winning mentality and a non cardboard personality. Football will be boring until then.

Good decision for Messi to stay things are more important than money and he has shown his loyalty.

Laporta: "With Messi it's not a matter of money, it's a matter of the future, the project."

?Money is not a motivating factor. Money doesn?t thrill me or make me play better because there are benefits to being wealthy. I?m just happy with a ball at my feet. My motivation comes from playing the game I love. If I wasn?t paid to be a professional footballer I would willingly play for nothing.? ? Lionel Messi.

Messi could have way more money back in the day if he left Bar?a to join City.

Of course Money is a factor but not the only one.

Some Samaritans in this forum act like they told their boss "hey i don't care about money, i just want to work here"

Pure guess work.

No one has any idea what City would have offered Messi as a salary.

More than 130m+ a season? Unlikely looking at salaries of both clubs.

City tried two times and don't worry the cheiks can offer him way more than that + Hidden gems in the gulf

It's like saying Pep is only getting the salary City is disclosing publicly ... that's being blind .

Also City would have made more money marketing Messi than Barcelona.

PS : if i remember correct they tried in 2015 and in 2018 (not counting the 2020 saga)

Not as simple as saying 'dont worry Sheiks can offer more' not that simple and they have to take into huge transfer fee on top of it so very unlikely they could offer more.

Pure guess work and City have not signed one huge player to massive money like that at any point.
