yes, he is the leading CL scorer for psg atm but i dont think that actually reflects his impact vis a vis mbappe. that said, i am now wading into subjective-ish territory and since i previously cited the primacy of facts, i can go no further  so let us leave it there until we see more CL psg action

I don't know why some people expect players in their mid 30s to be at the top of their game anymore, Messi is more of a moment-player now, which is understandable.

That said, even if he only shows up here and there now, while Mbappe is the more persistent threat, Messi is still PSGs top goalscorer in CL, and the one against City was a goal i can only see Salah doing on a consistent basis(as consistent as wonder goals are).

[Le Parisien 12/14] Lionel Messi is travelling to Qatar's capital Doha today. He could become the ambassador for the World Cup 2022 which is why he is making the journey

Stunning

And then add they made it from the group stage 18 years in a row. Wow!

They might not be not brilliant but they?d decent enough to get the team over the line in a lot of these league matches. Even someone like Paco Alcacer would have helped a lot so far this season.

We got 79 points last season and are on course for 57 this campaign. My guess is that the same squad as last season but with Memphis taking Messi?s spot would get around 70 points this season which would probably be enough for top 4 in the end.

Again to respond to this i have to do another little research,
Last time i've listed the point contribution of each player in the time of barcelona's 19 consecutive unbeaten last season (Levante 13-dec 20 to Valladolid 5-apr 21). Now let's see each goals and see how much was messi's influence/ contribution for every goals that was scored.

1. Levante: good position, good pass (assist is frankie), good finish - for me it's 50% contribution. Nice linking with Frankie

2. Valencia: failed penalty, nice rebound. Messi header near the post. 25% contribution. Penalty failed, the rebound was critical, and behind messi there was pedri who could finish it anyway.

3. Valladolid: good teamwork goal with frankie, pedri, messi. Pedri (assist). I give it 50% contribution but credit for the team passing.

4. Athletic (1st goal): again a backheel assist from pedri (assist). 50% contribution

5. Athletic (2nd): a super well taken shot, assist from griezmann (assist). 50% contribution. Would give more percent if he did some faints/ dribble before this finish, though.

6. Granada (1st): assist by alba, nicely taken shot from just inside of the box. 50% contribution.

7. Granada (2nd): freekick, low height. 100% contribution.

8. Athletic: a brilliant free kick to far corner. 100% contribution.

9. Betis: again a nice shot just from inside the box. Dembele (assist). 50% contribution.

10. Alaves (1st): individual goal from long distant shot. I didn't get who credited for the assist for this goal. A 75% contribution. Messi's 4th outside of the box in la liga that season (free kick included).

11. Alaves (2nd): again individual goal from long distance. Gonna give 100%, but okay still 75% since there was definitely someone passing the goal for him. 5th outside of the box now. Vs Alaves were outside of the world goals from him.

12. Cadiz: penalty (50% contribution).

13. Elche (1st): assist from Braithwaite, again a backheel assist (3rd that season). A 50% contribution, and a nice 1-2 combination, but more credit for messi who dribble and plan the goal with the direct run. Actually it could be 75% but okay i gave it only 50% to make rassvet and og happy.

14. Elche (2nd): messi dribble past 2 player ,being surrounded. Goal. Assist is less insignificant. 75% contribution.

15. Sevilla: fool the 1st player, get far from the 2nd player, 1st shot block by gk, 2nd shot was not. A 75% contribution. An individual goal.

16. Huesca (1st goal): long distant shot once again, after a flick. I say it's a 100% contribution. The last passer didn't even expect messi would made that move and shot. Unreal. 6th outside of the box now.

17. Huesca (2nd goal): a dribble and long distant shot once again. Now this is sensational. Messi made two long distance shots in games against alaves and huesca. He really destroyed them. Don't tell me he only did that against small teams when you know he also did that against the likes of liverpool and psg, amongst many other. Only that this type of goal of his have been occuring many times it became usual occurence last season. 7th outside of the box in la liga 2020-21. 100% contribution (solo effort).

18. Sociedad (1st): nice long ball assist from busquets. Also nice finish while turning his body. 50% contribution.

19. Sociedad (2nd): nice team work combination with puig and alba. Alba with assist. A 50% contribution.

Now let's breakdown again his goals from last season la liga. First of all, interesting fact. He strikes 8 goals from outside of the box (3 free kicks). 8.

Now, again back with the timeframe of 19 games (levante to valladolid), where barca only draw 3 times and 16 were wins, and he scored 19 of them, with 8 assist (a total of 27 goal contribution from 19 games).

There were:
- 2 free kicks
- 6 individual goals inc. Long shots that i rated with at least 75% contribution.

So 8 out of 19 goals during that 4 months were either free kicks or individual goals/ long shots from out of the box. This means almost 50% of the goals during that time frame were goals with minimum contribution from other players, while some of the remaining required some run, high accuracy /placement and brilliant finish from a teamwork combination. This certainly isn't showing that messi variable could be easily replaced by any other player. I mean where was the 'brilliant other player' assist and messi's tap in goals that OG, rassvet and the gangs were looking for? So rare, if any. His solo effort and huge factor in barca getting a goal was much more dominant, more impressive considering he's already 33 year old player. No iniesta , no xavi too. His assist from those 11/19 (outside his individual goals), came from pedri, frankie, griezmann, dembele, busquets, alba.. almost equally (busquets with 3). So, no other dominant players besides messi last season. He's the major factor of those 19 unbeaten run. In fact, his goal contribution were 27/48 (56%) already explain this.

Now, let's just imagine in the HOME matches against granada and celta where messi scored, barca conceded less than they scored (normally they wouldn't). We would pretty much behind only atletico (1 point) in the final table.

I think the key match was the real madrid match that made us a bit down, when it was an away match against big rival where it is normal to be defeated by just one goal. Not a slip like against granada and celta where their motivation was already dropped. And they shouldn't be.
