as a matter of honest introspection im really curious to hear, from the messi supporters, just what exactly would or does count as evidence against messi

if there are no limits to how often or how badly messi can fail and yet still be 'elite' then what you are proposing is a matter of faith, not argument or reason. and thats fine, too--maybe you just really like messi. but if that is the basis of your view then dont pretend its grounded in honest reflection

the reason i ask just what exactly counts as evidence against messi is because it seems very convenient to just wave everything away/ dismiss anything that is remotely critical of messi

in other words if missing crucial CL Pks DOESNT count against messi, or going 9-0 against Real DOESNT count, or getting knocked out of the CL in humiliating fashion for 6 consecutive years DOESNT count.... then what does? at what point is this just idol worship? again, thats fine too, but be honest about it

Messi was undeniably elite in 2018-2019, scored 51 games in 50 games, gave 20 assists, scored 12 CL goals, including 6 in 6 CL KO games. He was also elite in 17/18 but had a very bad tie v Roma (still scored 3 KO goals in 2 games v Chelsea to win us that tie just about by himself).

He wasn't elite in 19/20. He was elite in the summer of 2021 where we led Copa America in every single attacking category.

He hasn't been elite in 21/22.

It's really not that hard, and most Messi fans are reasonable and will agree with this.

Your definition of elite when it comes to Messi is that he can't have a single blemish while playing in a declining club (until Xavi), with a disastrous board (Barto), while also aging and declining himself. Using this definition of elite, CR7 has not been elite since 17/18 since all he's done since then is 3 x CL R of 16 eliminations, WC R of 16 elimination, and Euro Cup R of 16 elimination. And when he was elite during the RM CL 3 peat...it was helped by all time great teammates. Similar to Messi's 08-15, only Messi's happened earlier and is "out of memory" now for some people.

Using this definition of elite, Lewa was only ever elite for 19/20 and 20/21. 21/22 remains to be seen on how he does v Pool eventually.

Most Messi fans aren't making excuses for Messi and owning up to his decline. You just have an agenda where you deem him responsible for everything that ever happened to Barcelona, while giving other all time great players (CR7 and to a lesser extent Lewa) a complete pass for their own struggles.

Oh you mean an exact system where he used to play his best football, system that partialy he made famous and adored worldwide, a system where xavi was the megamind, system where he grew up. We sucked him dry for the last couple of years by not playing in any system, no team play, nothing. He plays in qsg with the same politics as barca was during barto reign. No tactics, no team play, names play the game.

Im grateful he left last summer because if he didnt, we'd be close to real if not at the top of the table, still in cl but with koemann still in charge, ready for another collapse on both fronts.

They've lost 3 of the last 5 games with Messi and only 1 all season without him. Relax, the data would still hold if I bothered to tally it up.
