Nothing. Getting 2 Ligue 1 goals is awful for an average player too. Nevermind for Messi. He's the most protected player ever. There'll always be excuses for him.

If he disappears in the World Cup you'll see a bunch of new excuses pop up.

Take a look at r/barca. I?ve never seen such incredibly dumb excuses and attempts on mental gymnastics as on that sub. When they got rekt by Real some people seriously thought Messi genuinly didnt care about the CL and he couldnt care less about the league, so he is just chillibg and saving himself for the WC. Like srsly dude, Messi himself has said he always wants to win.

To top it of those kinds of posts had hundreds of upvotes and the ones that didnt agree were downvoted to hell.

It's really not. 2 goals and a bunch of assists is mofs fgab enough for a midfielder or whatever position he's playing there. It's definitely not striker.

Messi can never be a midfielder with that work rate and off the ball thing.

Midfielders by definition have to do some work off the ball.

He has had numerous chances this season. He has missed them. Underperforming his xG currently. Hasn't scored a single free kick yet either. Seems like a genuine sudden decline.

what i dont get is how messi supporters will lol and meme at the fact that CR let a ball go through his legs on the way to goal in a FK and say THAT IS WHY JUVE WAS ELIMINATED--an arbitrary ricochet from a FK, which is statistically highly improbable

but will not admit that messi missing a pk (statistically the advantage is always on the striker not the GK) also had a role in PSGs elimination


in other words messi is never guilty of anything...which is not a tenable or serious view

maybe im crazy but i think missing a PK is more consequential than having a ball go through your legs as a member of defensive wall in a 30 yard free kick that still has to beat a keeper on the other side of it

maybe im just crazy tho

Ofcourse. First of all, 98% of free kicks aren't even at or around your leg level. Very rarely under the wall is attempted.

Penalty is a clean chance which heavily favours attackers. If you're the penalty taker you must score. Otherwise don't take penalties and let the penalty specialists take it. Its not like it's a shootout where you are forced to take it. If you're not that good at it, no problem; just let your teammate take it.

Players who are average at pens and still insist on taking it are just on an ego trip. Period.
