One thing's for sure, anyone who thinks Messi has brought a lot of money to the club since the start of 2020 when the pandemic hit is delusional to the extreme. We've paid him (with some still due for payment) nearly 180m in this period while our revenue was shite.
Maybe Messi does generate over 100m making his salary not a big deal in normal (if not ideal) conditions. But his humongous salary kept going while the club's revenue was taking hit after hit.
That was the whole big deal of covid impact. Revenue is highly dependant on many factors, most crushed by the covid situation. Expenditure is more or less fixed. Wages and taxes, bank loan returns keep going.

i didn't compare it. just found the first article that came up on google to point out to serghei that this happens all the time with big clubs and players. article was from 10 years ago also. do you think i was trying to prove my point by comparing what van perise got 10 years ago as loyalty bonus to what messi should receive now?
i'm messi biased and will not hide the fact that i don't really care what he gets payed. they could have gave him 1 billion for all i care.
but also i can agree that maybe it was a bit too much, even if we don't know for certain how the board and messi came up with this sum. maybe they tought is manageable, maybe he does make back a big part of it through revenue he brings. things is we got him for free and he has given us 15 years of top top performances. in my book that's the steal of the century.
playing for free is not an option as i've said. partly for legal reasons(don't even think that's possible) and partly because that would mean everything coming down. it would basically be a fuck you to the capitalist model and meritocracy. what should the other players do? also play for free? slash 50%, 70% of their wages? how do you think it should work?
the club isn't in this position because of messi. he was the least of our problems, huge contract and all that. we just burned the money on shit managers and shit players, ever since guardiola left. hell, we burned some money on shitty transfers even when guardiola was here, but market was a bit different.

i've seen that discussion around the tweet.
was thinking about the EU or spanish work laws and if it was possible to register such contracts. frankly i don't know and didn't want to bail messi out with this. like 'look guys, he couldn't have played for free, see??'. it's kind of a dumb take anyway, as no one works for free.
