Martin Montoya

Montoya was infinitely better tonight than Mascherano or Adriano, for example, yet somehow they're good enough to be starters.

Because I've followed Adriano since his Sevilla days and he has given us many many great games - we all know he is talented. But Montoya, c'mon - why are people so touchy when I criticizes him? I still haven't seen him play a single good game or show glimpses of a hidden talent that only waits to come out - none! It doesn't matter how many games we will give him, he doesn't have 'it'...

Did you not watch the 2012 Supercup? Or the early games of 2012-2013 La Liga? I'm not saying you should agree with me, I'm just curious if those games still made you think he doesn't have it.

So I take it you didn't watch the first few months of last season? Montoya is great; just off form right now. If he'd have scored that shot he made against RM last year, he'd be a hero here.

Also, Barta was once considered shite when he didn't have gametime to prove himself. Think about that and give Montoya the benefit of the doubt too.

The Bartra argument is incredibly useful. Up until recently, most of us rightfully thought he doesn't have what it takes. But you can't make a conclusion about that until you give the player an appropriate opportunity. So far Montoya hasn't been given that. The closest he got to it was the beginning of last season, and at that time, he showed glimpses of future-starting-RB brilliance.

Montoya is clearly a good player and there are other players that should take responsobility for getting a result tonight long before looking to place any blame on him.

Problem-->Our defence was shit. Adriano was bad. Pique and Masch are not Barca material.

Barca fans- "OMG Masch has been our best CB for the past years. Pique is world class. Just off form. Adriano is versatile. Played badly because he's probably injured. Alba and Alves are missing thats why the big names are not performing"

So whats the coping mechanism of some fans--> Blame the youngster Montoya who was our best defender. "OMG he is not worthy of Barca. Sell Sell Sell!!"

OK, ok I was over exaggerating - he had some decent games. But no, I don't think he is talented enough / have the potential to become our starting RB :(

But Montoya has been given many opportunities, he played last week and today for full 90 minutes and just like you said last season. Bartra was give the unthankful job to play against a scary Bayern team without any experience. BUT, Bartra was given 2-3 chances this season and he not only took them but also showed great potential and talent - he will (ok, masch is standing in the way right now) hopefully evolve - it looks like he has 'it'

Two games are hardly an actual opportunity. Especially if he played one of them outside his natural position, and if both come at a time when our team is underperforming and many of our key players are missing. He needs a solid stable run of games, just like Bartra was given at the end of last season and recently. Even then, it's still possible that there's more to come.

Yeah he wasn't as good as expected but he was facing Muniain all alone with no help from Alexis or Xavi. Still he was better than other defender.

Key moment of the game, if this cross gets through I think we score. Great block by the Bilbao defender.
