Now people are starting to see my point of view. I thought my opinions were laughable?

He could work alongside pique btw.

I'd prefer, ideally, someone with better pace to pair with Gerard but Hummels would be fantastic...Still not sure how it will work out, pairing them together, but his quality can't be questioned...Luiz on the other hand?...Let's institute a David Luiz transfer ban

Honestly neither Hummels or Pique are slow for a CB at all,I would actually consider them to have the ideal speed normally needed for a CB in big clubs
thing is we just need players who are quicker than what most clubs need due to our playing style ,we will need some alteration to get used having them both and it will cause problems from time to time
with that said I would take Hummels length than Mascherano speed ,we need some height desperately into the back line

Only problem with this initial ban and potential call for elections is how it could unsettle any potential signing, even in an interim suspension of the transfer ban...I always remember the Laporta election and when Cesc was poached from the club while attention was diverted elsewhere...So while elections are needed, I do fear for the board dropping the ball (Again) and leaving us high & dry

I'd still rather spend 10M more on someone like Mangala than Hummels tbh. (Or Benatia, also a great defender)

Yeah, someone whose back-line concedes 5 against mighty Eintracht Frankfurt just HAS TO BE a much better defender than Hummels. Clearly.

marquez - pique were very vulnerable.

The pair was only vulnerable not because of lack of pace, but because of Rafa's self-initiated blunders(like the one against Drogba at CN). It was pep's preferred CB pairing during the sec. half of 2008-09, and he would've most likely continued to play them if not for the Mexican's injury against Chelsea. Rafa was slow, but an excellent reader of the game, likewise Hummels, except the german is a more well-rounded defender. What Rafa and piqué shared was a working chemistry and understanding/reading each other's movement, and its all that comes down to.

The pace issue has been overstated on this thread, and elsewhere. The next poster who comes here whinging about it, will get it from me. :p

Marquez-pique was some beautiful defending, many here wouldn't know though.

hummels and pique would work, but like marquez-pique brain farts will happen because they will both go for the same ball.

as they are the same type of defenders, but it will be some of the koolest defending we have seen. since marquez-pique
