I actually remember the Marquez-Pique partnership very well...and long story short it paled in comparison to Pique and Puyol. We need a fighter, someone that reads the game well. Mascherano does this but his positional awareness is terrible...although it's not his fault since he shouldnt be a first choice CB in the first place.
Thiago Silva, Koscielny and Kompany...in that order is the type we need imo. Hummels is like 6'3-4 and is a MONSTER in the air- that is the only thing I'd be excited about with getting him.

Puyol is one of all time greatest defenders ,he is better than Pique or Marquez ever been and is even better the 3 you mentioned
so yes the Pique + Puyol was better than Marquez + Pique ,also Puyol + Marquez was better than Marquez + Pique
Now we are living in 2014 and we aren't getting Puyol again ,We aren't getting T.Silva or Kompany and there is very little chance we will get Koscielny
Our options are between Luiz/Hummels/Benatia/Mangala and the last one seems to be on his way to Man.City btw
Man.City/Manu/Barcelona and may be Chelsea,RM too are all going to try to find a new world class CB this season in addition to Barcelona .our options aren't too wide as ppl might think

Benatia is yet another player bought last season by a big club from a smaller club which means we start getting interested in him. Its ridiculous.

Benatia is good but he will be crazy expensive..there are plenty of good CBs who were like him before last season and just need to be given a chance. Bartra is one of them.
Mangala is overrated like most of Porto's players. Luiz is absolutely not what we need. If those were my only options I'd take Hummels just because we are so weak at corners and set plays for the reasons I already mentioned. I honestly want a defensive fullback as much or even more than a CB. I want to bring balance back to our defense.

Hummels was great vs Real. If it weren't for his great defending, it would've seriously been like 5-0 or 6-0. If Lewandowski wasn't suspended it would've been like 3-2 or 2-2 and everyone would be praising Dortmund.

Jup, I too think he would have made quite the difference. It was disgraceful how woeful their passing and running was regarding their offensive play. It became pretty evident that he is the one who orchestrates their offense in terms of holding and distributing the ball. Also Reus wasn't used to the false 9 and didn't seem to know which lanes Auba etc. were taking and where exactly they were expecting the ball.
