Nelson Semedo

Well Semedo looked decent early on in the season, was in and out of team, and yeah, has been poor recently. But last season Roberto showed himself to be nowhere near good enough. And even this season he's been defensively suspect. He's better on the ball than Semedo, true, but I see nothing to be gained in dropping our potentially long term RB in favour of someone who's proven himself deficient over the course of an entire season. (at RB that is. As a squad player I like him.) We need to be thinking long term.

Long term the best RB plays and Semedo is getting plenty of chances to prove it and for me hasnt yet.

He will get more chances and needs to get a lot better.

Slow on the cover and just stops tracking Gaya's run to cover the player that's already covered. Goal is completely on Rakitic. He keeps going and he can at least block the cross.

Yea, what are we even talking about? Semedo, at least in this play, does everything by the book. Keeps a reasonable distance with Umtiti and is in reach of both Guedes - his man, and Zaza if he gets behind Umtiti (basically providing assistance for Umtiti). Then ball is played to Guedes, and Semedo closes him down in time, and has him well handled, then Rakitic sleeps, does nothing and Gaya makes the difference.

Has he got stamina issues or something? Why does Valverde keep subbing him off!?

Of course, he was exposed today but that was due to lack of support from mid and then Vidal is no improvement! The idiot almost gave a back pass to their striker for crying out loud!!

Well long term Roberto isn't a Barca RB, he just isn't. Is Semedo? Time will tell. So for me it's a choice between trying something that previously failed and hoping for a different result (Einstein's definition of insanity), or trusting in the new guy we've bought specifically for that role, and giving him an extended period of time to prove himself.

He was having some confidence issues after Valencia's goal. Had a poor 10 min. spell after that. Until then, I think he played well.

Long term will work itself out.

When both are fit you play the better RB for most part and in my opinion that is Roberto.

If Semedo is the long term RB he will win his spot.

You are right about Rakitic. Doesn't change the fact he got skinned on other occasions too. Against Juve as well.

Granted, Costa and Guedes are top but we expected more from the man who we believed was a much better defender than Roberto (and Vidal).

Costa was kept quiet almost all game. Actually, Juventus didn't create much on that night. Maybe 2-3 chances that's it, and mostly from runs by Dybala.

Roberto/Vidal had the entire of last season to show us if they're capable of being the starting RB we need and they failed. Bob wasn't very bad but certainly not good enough. Vidal was an epic failure. Semedo in the little time he's been here has shown enough IMO, to merit a place in the starting lineup and be able to grow into the position.
