Making Dembele available is actually better for the team, imagine using Adama as our starting winger and relagating Dembele so Adama doesn't fear competition, then you'll see Adama doing whatever he likes but the competition would drive other wingers to be better. Relegating Dembele and having to trust Adama or Abde fully would've been messed up.

Making the ultimatum public was the part that makes it worse but they were trying to apply as much pressure on him as could and probably thought making it public increased that even more.

Dembele doesnt just have to accept an offer because club wants him to and he called their bluff and has been proven correct seemingly.

Club played it poorly from overhyping him as were desperately trying to get him to sign but doing it while pleading poverty for a wage cut before then spending money on Torres and announcing would be back in summer as major player in market. Laporta talks too much at times and it didnt help him here. From that and then public announcement he wouldnt play again all just made situation worse.
