I think, unlike Ronaldo, she is the actual GOAT in her sport, so maybe her smugness is more able to be backed up, even though Don and I have acknowledged it isn't nice to see.
I seen an interview with her when BBC went to her during an event at this Olympics and she seemed a fairly nice girl. Probably harsh to put her on Noah Lyles level of arrogance anyway, lol.

These type of monikers and discussions should be reserved for transcendental figures, with prioritization by popularity of sport (which is a proxy for amount of competition).
Football is INSANELY competitive (especially pre 2020s when talent was the main driving force behind success and not tactics/systems etc.). Some other sports that deserve mention would be tennis and maybe basketball (not truly global).

Yeah that is a point too.
That ESPN list had Phelps as number 1 athlete of 21st century and Messi in 3. Messi should be 1 because he's the greatest of the century so far (and maybe all time, Maradona and Pele debate, but definitely the century so far) in a sport which has insane levels of competition and uptake. Far more people play football at grassroots and professional level than any other sports. Plus it's a team sport which makes it even more competitive to be the very best player.
I guess their argument separate from the above would be that Phelps is a better swimmer than Messi is a footballer, but to me that is absolute bollocks too.
