Anyone who has watched him play knows that he's the complete defender.

Also, coming from the guy who mentions big games and then goes on to mention a normal league game against Aston Villa because the big scoreline suited his narrative.

If I was to create a list of skills/attributes and then rate them out of 10. VVD would beat Pique in probably 75% of them. I think it's equally important in how you use those skills. Pique's ability on the ball was absolutely crucial in our 2010/2011 season, arguably 14/15 too. Great in the World Cup where Spain only conceded 2 goals all tournament hence why they won it. Obviously he's been part of some of the all time greatest teams ever built but it's not like those teams were leaky in defence.

Ramos is great defender but pure defensive skills are a tad overrated. Folded many times against better than good players. Many lapses in concentration. Sometimes producing awful passes. Easy to rile up and get sent off. Goals masked his flaws.

This has always been purely my own opinion based on what I have seen. Recently found analytical articles completely agreeing with that opinion. Must be true then.

VVD looks way more reliable than Ramos. Willing to bet you ask most CD if they would rather be paired with Ramos or VVD and they would pick latter.

Has a great legacy though and can obviously be proud. Was clutch at right moments with goals helped win CL.
