Messi isn't even average at penalties. Ronaldo is just better at them so people blow it out of proportion. Messi's one big miss(against Chelsea) was a matter of maybe 2 or 3 inches. It actually was really well taken and Cech would have had no chance if had been a tiny bit lower. Luck just wasn't on our side. As for long shots, it astonishes me when Ronaldo fans try to make it seem like long shots are such an important attribute. I am sure if Messi took 10 shots from 5 yards outside the box every match, he would score some of them but he is too busy using his superior dribbling, passing, and close range finishing to lead Barcelona to victory.

I'm not sure about the exact figure but I think Messi has missed around 7-8 penalties in his career. Last season he also missed a crucial penalty against Sevilla. It is one area where he could improve.

Im not critisizing Leo though, the long shot thing is true, he is average at them, its not a bad thing, out system does not rely on Messi shots from 40 yards out.
No player is amazing at everything, almost all of them are bad at a few atributes, Leo isnt. He is average at a few things and thats oki, completely regardless of Ronaldo bu the way.
He doesnt have to improve mediocre attributes when he is godlike at others imo, we all surely respect him for it.

Long shots are overrated. What is their conversion rate? Look at Ronaldo. He scores maybe out 1 out of 50 shots. Whereas Leo's every other great dribble ends up in the back of the net. Besides how will Barca control possession if they keep shooting from long range. This is one of the main reason that Barca's opposition lets them have so much possession. They don't have the dribbling and ball control skills of our team. They are forced to hot on the counter and take long shots often.

But Leo can definitely improve in penalty taking. Interesting point who will take our penalties if Leo is out? Cesc, Iniesta or Xavi?(Villa will most probably be on the bench :(

By Daily Maverick:

It’s that time of year when we honour those athletes who have excelled in their selected professions – breaking records and yet remaining refreshingly “normal”. Daily Maverick’s Sportspeople of the Year are a breath of fresh air in an ever-growing culture of flash and cash.

INTERNATIONAL SPORTS PERSON OF THE YEAR: LIONEL MESSI

It’s easy to wax lyrical about Lionel Messi – he can’t seem to stop scoring goals and nobody seems to know how to slow him down. Diminutive and magical, Messi has had a tremendous year where records have buckled under his feet. And while he might never get close to the glory of 18 Olympic Golds or defending a title, he is so tremendously talented that he rarely seems to have an off day.

Messi doesn’t look like an athlete – not in the traditional sense of the word, anyway. If you didn’t know what he looked like and you passed him on the street, you probably wouldn’t look twice. For a man of such exceptional talent, Messi just seems so incredibly ordinary, average, normal. But he’s not – words from the thesaurus could be racked, stacked and broken and you still wouldn’t be able to describe him adequately.

Having already netted 88 goals this year – surpassing Gerd Muller’s 1972 record of 85 goals – he still has a game to go to add to his tally. And it would be a surprise if he didn’t manage to net at least one more.

While players across all sports often go through bad patches, Messi seemingly doesn’t know when to stop. And while this writer would be foolish to try and wind up words about the little magician like Sid Lowe does, she does know that at the age of 25, Messi is already a legend – and we can expect records to fall at his all-conquering feet like empires fell at the feet of Napoleon.

And just like the little French general, the little Argentinian will likely rule the football field for a long time to come.

Messi has 8 missed penalties (1 scored from rebound, 5 saved, 1 over, 1 post); 34 scored + 1 in shoot-out. In Barca 1st and Argentina senior. That's 84 % conversion rate (or 81.4% without rebound score).

Cronaldo missed three last season (Bayern, Bilbao, Turkey). He also missed one against Almería in 2009-10 (in the match he was sent off). He missed one against Chelsea 2007-08 UCL final shoot-out. Two other with ManU (one against Barcelona in UCL). At least 7 missed, that is. 49 converted penalties. 87.5 %.

We debunked that myth few months ago but still thank you for another reminder. Some people still cling onto it probably because Messi missed few more of those important ones.

One more:
Lionel Messi was the clear winner of World Soccer’s World Player of the Year award. The Barcelona and Argentina star collected more than twice as many votes as his nearest rivals, Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid and Portugal, and club-mate, Andres Iniesta of Spain.

It is the third time Messi has won the award, having previously triumphed in 2009 and 2011. He joins Brazil’s Ronaldo, who is the only other player to have won the award on three occasions.

This year, for the first time in the 30-year history of the awards, the votes from readers were combined with those from an independent panel of experts. The final vote (displayed here as percentages) were weighted to ensure 50 per cent for the reader votes and 50 per cent for those from the panel.

2012 World Player of the Year

1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona & Argentina) 47.33%

2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid & Portugal) 19.01

3. Andres Iniesta (Barcelona & Spain) 9.77

some of the votes are just mesmerizing. khedira over xavi, fellaini over iniesta, most of them vote their fellow countrymen etc. it's just bullshit.

i mean look at this for example

James Montague, World Soccer, England

Aboutrika, Theo Bucker, Al Ahly

Casillas – Kompany, Ivanovic, Hummels – Iniesta, Pirlo, Aboutrika – Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo, Messi, Falcao

how can anybody take this seriously??? in the end you just look at the numbers, messi 47%, but this is just unbelivable. those individual awards are waaayyyyy too overrated.

http://www.worldsoccer.com/features/world-soccer-panel-how-the-experts-voted-in-the-2012-awards

i found only one reasonable lineup there and it's from the football masterbrain, jonathan wilson:

Jonathan Wilson, World Soccer, England

Messi, Renard, Spain

Buffon – Lahm, Thiago Silva, Kompany, Alba – Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta – Messi, Falcao, Ronaldo

other than that people don't even care about the criteria, they just vote with their hearth, which makes it nonsense in first place. there are very few journalists without any bias.

I'm just giving information, this doesn't mean that I agree with those ratings. Some of the votes are just funny

Tom Saintfiet, national coach, Yemen
Pirlo, Renard, Zambia
Casillas – Gebre Selassie, Kompany, Chiellini, Fabio Coentrao – Pirlo, Yaya Toure, Messi – Ronaldo, Falcao, David Silva

And neymar in the 6 place, while xavi is in the 8..bullshit

This one is interesting:

Fermin De La Calle, Terra, Spain

Messi, Klopp, Real Madrid

Casillas – Maggio, Sergio Ramos, Barzagli, Alba – Xabi Alonso, Gotze, Silva – Messi, Falcao, Cristiano.

Safe to say he tried hard to avoid Barcelona players even omitting the national team, I'm surprised he even chooses Messi over Ronaldo :whistle2:

Now that we are talking about his long range efforts, what is his longest range goal from open play?

I have a short memory but I'd say the one against ManU UCL final.

Guinness & FIFA recognises Messi's single-year goal record

http://www.dnaindia.com/sport/report_guinness-recognises-messi-s-single-year-goal-record_1777465

Guinness World Records has recognised FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi for setting a new mark for most goals in a calendar year - 88 and counting.

The 25-year-old Argentine has notched that total with two Spanish league matches left in 2012, surpassing the previous record that Germany's Gerd Muller had held for 40 years.

Guinness and FIFA issued a statement Thursday saying that Messi's goals this year and those of Muller in 1972 are part of the official record and there should be no controversy surrounding the Argentine's feat.
