We keep hearing about how 'great' these players are and how Southgate is holding them back.
But are they as good as claimed? They have to take some responsibility for their own generally pitiful performances; it's not all on the coach, just partly.
Their players are clearly generally good, but...
I will give you one example: according to people who follow the PL (and I follow it too), Declan Rice is a world-class player who's been superb for Arsenal this season. Yet I have watched him a lot dating back to his West Ham days, and he seems a slightly above average player. Good positioning generally, but exceptionally limited on the ball. I also don't believe he has been as good for Arsenal as claimed (and I successfully predicted Bayern to eliminate them and Man City to beat them to the title), and he's not even one third of the player Rodri is. There must be far less heralded defensive midfielders in Europe who could do better than Rice, but aren't English and don't have the league's hype behind them.
I can go right through their squad and say the same about some others. They do have some talented players, but this 'by a mile the best squad in the tournament' is absolute bollocks for me - as it was when gimps like Beckham, Gerrard and Lampard were getting that sort of treatment and smoke blown up their arse, only to fail time and again.
More to the point - as I said in the other thread - you don't win anything for being a bunch of hyped up names thrown together with zero cohesion.
