@spark Of course Europa League isn't an amazing cup.. but to say that you don't have to be mentally strong for it just because it is not the "Champions League" is naive. I was mainly talking about his ability in big games and how harder opponents do not phase him. I think Fabregas' lack of quality and mental strength in ANY big games well outweighs his two penalties which you stated. That is why he is being sold.

The problem I've here is the insistence on people trying to make a case for Rakitic in relative terms. He's a bit faster, more hard working than Cesc. Hence a perfect fit for Barca. How many of you thought he'd a barca profile whilst he was still playing at Schalke, or in his early time at Sevilla, rather how many here wanted him in the summer of 2013? For a Barca MF space is at a premium, the brain needs to work faster than the feet, its not so much about pure ball skills, but intelligence that makes a Barca CM tick. Does Rakitic have the required temperament and tactical understanding to thrive in a diff set-up than he's accustomed to? Its why Cesc failed. Now Rakitic could well prove his critics wrong in due course. But so far, his advocates haven't brought forward any compelling arguments in his favor.

He improved a lot since his Schalke years.
He was just an average/very good midfielder.

He just somehow stepped up and improved a lot in the last 2-3 years.
It is hard to answer if he has everything needed for Barca. We will have to wait for the first matches.
But he has a lot of potential and skills on paper.

Again, he can't be worse than Cesc. Cesc just doesn't fit our style.
Rakitic, at least on paper, has the skills/potential to play both Iniesta's and Xavi's role.
Also, he can play much deeper than Xavi. Also, he can be used as a Mr or Ml in 442 formations, if needed at some moments.

He is much more versatile than Cesc, works much harder, and as someone said: Cesc was already burned out when he came here.
Rakitic hasn't won any major trophy except Uefa cup. So, he will also have a much bigger motivation and a hunger than Cesc and some other players from our team.

Again, he can be either better than Cesc, or equally average as Cesc.
He won't be worse than Cesc (for Barca team).

@zanela Had you actually seen that through ball before? The fact you asked for proof of his through balls and he did this only last month makes me think you do not actually watch Sevilla or Rakitic for that matter?

He is listed as a troughball specialist at whoscored

Just need to watch the matches, dear lady.

I've already seen it. The Rakitic fanboy was claiming he is a specialist in through balls. To be called a specialist, there should be concrete evidence spread over a period of time, not a mere instance.

Clint Dempsey is an amazing dribbler because this

Would Crouch be better at Barca than Stoke? YES.

I don't agree with that at all, so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree then.

Sumlit, you may be right about Bale succeeding at Barca, that was more the first thing of the top of my head and not something I really thought about, I was just trying to say that players don't just automatically play better because they move to a bigger club.

He plays on Thursday for Croatia against Brazil.

For those who haven't watched him too much, this will be a good chance.

Calma, calma
I'm feeling more and more confident that it's Fabregas who wants to leave, not Barca forcing him out. Replacing him with Rakitic for just 18M is a great deal, considering the lack of other viable options. No point comparing him to Cesc as I don't think Barca can keep him

I'm not a fanboy of Rakitic if that's the case.

Yeah I definitely agree with you about the players not necessarily playing better because they move to a better club. There are a lot of variables at play in a player's performance for that statement to be a fact.

On our team, Alex Song is the perfect example to your argument. Talented player who has without a doubt been worse at Barca than he was at Arsenal, for many number of reasons.

@zanela To reiterate my argument.. How can Rakitic show his through ball ability consistently with Bacca or Gameiro as a lone striker for the majority of games? The limited times he has had the chance to prove his through balls and vision he has.

@Semi-Neutral I don't know why you brought Crouch up in the first place lol but Crouch worse at Barca than Stoke???.....

Why do you think that?

Cesc doesn't have a clear role in the team, so he is not a player difficult to be replaced. Cesc doesn't fit at all, that's why I think there's a good chance Rakitic will do well. But we'll have to wait and see.

Don't worry about Rakitic's mentality.

For example, in Croatia's national team, he never disappears or hides on the field.

this. i like that every time i watch him he has confidence in his ability and technique.

don't even know why you guys are arguing about him...fro 20m just take him and run.

The irony of your advice is that your evidence is coming from whoscored and not from watching matches
Where did you conclusion come from?

I do watch the matches and also follow his statistics/ratings at whoscored.
