First of all i have to say to the cocky members of the forum to calm down.
Rakitic is here to replace Cesc and when i saw the possibility of that happenning i was so glad because i was almost always impressed the way he played and always was thinking i wish we had this guy instead of Cesc due to his physicalities alone.
He seems like a really smart footballer and it will do it for now.You can watch him at the WC and make your first impressions and then make a final one when he plays in our shirt but GIVE HIM A CHANCE ! The most succesful signings this club had were the ones with lowest expectations,Rakitic has both heart and brains to be what it takes,i believe..Until then calm your tits, good signing.
-Personally my favourite Croatian footballer

Rakitic's key passes per match: 2,3
Cesc's: 1,4

That doesn't tell us much though.

My understanding of a "key pass" is that it refers to the pass to a teammate that led to a shot on goal. We as a team have less shots and shots on goal than other teams in general, therefore our players have generally less key passes.

Not true. Sevilla is 8th, and Barça 2nd, in shots per game average. 13.1 vs 16.9

I am pretty sure that Barca has more shots on goal in one Season than an average midtable team.
And thus, our midfielders will usually have more key passes than midfielders from midtable teams.

I believe whoscored use set pieces as key passes anyway. They do for chances created.

Perhaps that could be explained by the fact that Rakitic is a regular starter while Cecs is not?

Anyway, according to OPTA, a key pass is "The final pass or pass-cum-shot leading to the recipient of the ball having an attempt at goal without scoring."

Rakitic being a starter has nothing to do with key passes per game

Why not? He played more minutes therefore had more passes to a teammate who took a shot on goal, as opposed to Cesc, who played less minutes, and less chances, less passes in general?

Just a thought.

We'll see how he plays against Brazil on Thursday and the rest of the WC + when he comes to Barca.

One thing is 99.99% for sure, he will be at Barca and we can see he's stats then.
